Iran National Museum

An 80 years old museum that is considered the mother museum in Iran's museum tradition. It is not only the largest archeological and historical museum in Iran but also one of the world's most important reputable museums in volume, diversity and also the quality of cultural heritages/ monuments /museum objects/artifacts

It covers an area of around 20,000 square meter, two Ancient Iran (pre -Islamic) and post-Islamic museums that contains 300,000 artifacts ,Pottery dishes, metal objects, textile , some rare coins and books that all belong to ancient and medieval Iran and 9 research departments.

This museum and artifacts in it could be considered as a good package for introducing Iran, its history, culture and traditions to those who are interested in it.

  • Ancient Iran (Pre-Islamic ) Museum :

The main building was designed by André Godard, the French Architect and built by two Iranian Architects Abbas Ali and Morad Tabrizi .The entrance gate of the museum was built in the style of the Taq-e- Kasra , Persian monument that belongs to Sassanid-era  ;also, all bricks are used in this structure are in dark red that remind the architecture of Sassanid dynasty. So, it can be said that the design and plan of the museum has a good compliment with the monuments are kept in it .It also represent history and art of Iran in a good way. It comprises of two "Pre-history" and "History" Museums in three halls in which some rare medieval textiles, rug pieces and archeological relics beside the oldest artifacts of museums that are found from Ganj Par and Kashfrud sites and belong to Lower, middle and upper Paleolithic and also, Neolithic, chalcolithic, early and late Bronze Ages, Iron Ages I-III, through the Median, Achaemenid, Seleucid, Parthian, and Sassanid ages are kept.   • Post Islamic Museum:

A three floor building with six halls in 4000 square meter that its architecture inspired from Bishapour Sassanid palace and in octagonal shape. Visiting this museum must be started from second floor that includes Seljuk ,Ilkhanid and Islamic era and finished in first floor that comprises of Quran Hall, Timurid dynasty , Safavid  ,Afshar ,Zandieh and Qajar Dynasty.

Pottery pieces, texts, artworks, candlesticks, oil lamps, ceramic, stones are etc. are some objects of this museum.

Most of the excavations reached from Sheikh Safi Ardebil, too, are kept here.
